 Basic Interview Questions for Mechanical Engineer Fresher

Following are the best Top 10 Mechanical Engineering Interview Questions & Answers.

1.What is the difference between two stroke and four stroke engine?

The remarkable difference between two and four stroke engine is that a four-stroke engine goes through four strokes or cycle to generate one power stroke i.e. Intake, Compression, Combustion (Power), & Exhaust and two complete revolutions of the crankshaft. Whereas the two-stroke engine goes through two strokes i.e. Scavenging/Compression and Combustion/Exhaust by just up and down movement of piston to generate one power stroke or one complete revolution of the crankshaft. A two-stroke engine produces more power in comparison to four stroke engines.

2. What is factor of safety (FOS) or margin of safety?

Factor of safety is defined as the ability of a system to perform or withstand beyond the designed or expected loads. Mathematically, it is the ratio of ultimate strength to the maximum permissible stress or the actual working stress. It must not be less than 1. A good FOS is considered somewhat beyond 5 as an absolute number.

                      The margin of safety is defined as the factor of safety minus one i.e. FOS-1.

3.What is bending allowance in sheet metal?

Bending Allowance is defined as the material need to be added to real or actual leg length of the      flanges in order to get the correct flat length of the part for the fabrication purposes.

Bending Allowance can be calculated by the given formula

BA = Î¸ (R + KT)

where Î¸ is in radian

R is inside bend radius

K is k factor

T is thickness of the sheet metal

 4.What is GD&T?

GD&T, known as Geometric Dimensioning and tolerancing is a system in which design engineers' intent and manufacturing instructions, requirements and engineering tolerances are represented by different assigned symbols, so as to control feature geometry and deviations and variations in manufacturing processes to get the desired part precisely manufactured as designed to fulfill the requirements.

5.What is the difference between Additive and Subtracting Manufacturing?

Additive and Subtracting both are the manufacturing techniques which are widely used as per the requirements. The main difference between additive and subtracting manufacturing is the way itself by which product is being manufactured, in additive manufacturing often referred to as 3D printing in which an object is created by layer-by-layer deposition of the material one over another to form the desired 3d part or object. While as, in subtracting manufacturing mostly referred to as CNC machining, the object or part is manufactured by removal of material by different material removal processes or operation on a solid block or piece of the material to be manufactured.
